On Tuesday the rosters for the 2016 All-Star Futures Game were announced, and for the third consecutive year two prospects from the Los Angeles Dodgers organization were selected to play in the game.
Triple-A Oklahoma City pitcher Jharel Cotton, who is from the U.S. Virgin Islands, was selected to play for the World team, and Double-A Tulsa second baseman Willie Calhoun was named to the U.S. roster.
Cotton, who was a 20th round pick of the Dodgers in 2012 out of East Carolina University, is currently 6-4 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 17 games (11 starts) this season with Oklahoma City.
In 68.2 innings pitched, the 24 year old has 82 strikeouts compared to 25 walks. Cotton has a 3.69 career ERA in 380 Minor League innings spread across five seasons.
The Dodgers selected Calhoun in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of Yavapai College in Arizona. In 74 games this season with the Drillers, he’s batting .260/.326/.473 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs.
Calhoun is a career .288 hitter with 25 home runs since the start of the 2015 season. He also participated in Texas League All-star Game on Tuesday.
Five Dodgers prospects have played in the Futures Game since 2013, with Joc Pederson playing for the U.S. in 2013, Corey Seager playing for the U.S. and Julio Urias playing for the World team in 2014. Kyle Farmer played for the U.S. and Juan Gonzalez playing for the World last year.
Pederson, Seager and Urias are all currently on the Dodgers’ roster, while Farmer is Calhoun’s Drillers teammate, and Gonzalez is now pitching in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
This year’s Futures Games features 15 former first-round picks and players from 11 different countries and territories. The game will take place in San Diego’s Petco Park on Sunday, July 10 at 4 p.m., and will be televised on MLB Network.
