Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was making steady progress over recent weeks in his recovery from last year’s shoulder surgery, but the southpaw has hit another snag. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts aid that Ryu missed a scheduled bullpen session due to a groin strain.

“He’s still doing things to keep his arm in shape,” Roberts added on Saturday. “We’re going to take a couple of days to let this calm down and then get him back on the mound.” Ryu was projected to be ready for Spring Training at the time of undergoing surgery to repair the torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

He threw multiple bullpen sessions prior to camp beginning, but was temporarily shut down in early March due to lingering discomfort in his left shoulder. Ryu eventually resumed throwing, however his hope of returning in May had all been declared but impossible.

“I think the whole time we thought we were going to have him back sooner. But, there was the setback in the middle of spring, and this is technically a setback,” Roberts said of Ryu’s latest hurdle.

“I don’t know how severe the injury is. We need him back, but we need him back healthy. Hopefully he’ll be back on the mound soon.” The left-hander recently threw multiple simulated games at Camelback Ranch, with an increase in workload between each.

Ryu went a combined 28-15 with a 3.17 ERA, 2.97 FIP and 1.19 WHIP in 56 starts over his first two seasons with the Dodgers while pitching with the torn labrum.
