The Los Angeles Dodgers were prominently featured in Baseball America’s top 100 prospects list for the 2020 season, headlined by Gavin Lux’s inclusion at No. 4 overall.
He was one of seven Dodgers prospects to make the cut, along with Dustin May (No. 20), Keibert Ruiz (81), Tony Gonsolin (82), Josiah Gray (84), Jeter Downs (86) and Diego Cartaya (97).
The Tampa Bay Rays are represented by a league-high eight players in the rankings, including Wander Franco, who was deemed the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball for a second consecutive year.
The Dodgers’ seven prospects is good for the second-most in the league, followed by the Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres, who each have six players mentioned on the list. The Milwaukee Brewers were the only team to not have a prospect included in the rankings.
Lux is coming off a historic 2019 season in which he hit a combined .347/.421/.607 with 25 doubles, eight triples, 26 home runs and 76 RBI between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City.
He went on to post a .705 on-base plus slugging in 23 games at the Major League level before earning a spot on the Dodgers’ National League Division Series roster.
May navigated a path similar to that of Lux, also beginning the 2019 season with the Drillers before joining Oklahoma City and eventually making his MLB debut. He went 2-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 34.2 innings for the Dodgers, primarily pitching out of the bullpen.
Ruiz also split time with Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City before a broken finger ended his season in July. His numbers dipped from the previous year, although he is still considered a top-10 catching prospect heading into 2020.
Gonsolin was one of the eight rookies who made his MLB debut last season. He thrived in both the starting rotation and bullpen, compiling a 4-2 record, 2.93 ERA, 3.86 FIP and 1.03 WHIP over 40 innings pitched.
Gray was acquired by the Dodgers last year from the Cincinnati Reds and enjoyed a breakout season, seeing time with three different affiliates. Downs was also part of the trade, appearing in games for High-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Tulsa.
Cartaya impressed in his first professional season, posting a .775 OPS with 18 extra-base hits and 22 RBI over 49 games between the Arizona League and Dominican Summer League. At 18 years old, he is quickly emerging as one of the better catching prospects the league has to offer.
