Freddie Freeman’s consistency during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers has become a staple and factor manager Dave Roberts can rely on. At the plate, Freeman has a steady approach that fuels consistent success, and in the field, he’s one of the most steady gloves at first base.
Freeman factored into the Dodgers’ win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, collecting three hits, including a double and two RBI. But in the ninth inning he made an uncharacteristic throwing error that clouded his personal evaluation.
“It was good,” Freeman initially said of his hitting. “Still feel OK, not great. But I got the hits with guys in scoring position, so when they counted, got them. But I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight because of that last throw.”
In his 327 games at first base with the Dodgers, Freeman has committed just seven errors. His miscue on Monday proves more than likely to just blip, but frustrating nonetheless for the star veteran.
“I made Dinelson (Lamet) throw more pitches,” Freeman said. “It was so much more than just making an error, but luckily he was able to get us out of that. You never know what can happen in those situations. I made a good play, but threw it away and didn’t complete it.
“Those are the little things that frustrate me. There’s not really anything to work on, just throw a better throw. One of those frustrating things over the course of a season.”

The key to what Freeman has done in the past and what he should be in the Dodgers lineup this season is being the beneficiary of added RBI chances. Shohei Ohtani batting second in the order provides Freeman with opportunities similar to what he saw during his time with the Atlanta Braves.
Through seven games thus far, Freeman has six RBI, five walks and two extra-base hits. He’s already shown each area of his game at the plate, which then bumps the line to whoever is in the cleanup spot behind him.
