The Los Angeles Dodgers’ search for a frontline starting pitcher this past offseason culminated with the acquisition of Tyler Glasnow from the Tampa Bay Rays.
The right-hander has shown why he has long been considered one of the most talented starters in baseball. Through 13 starts, he is 6-4 with a 2.93 ERA, 2.70 FIP, 0.90 WHIP and 11.7 strikeouts per nine in 80 innings pitched.
Along with his success on the field, Glasnow is widely regarded as one of the most analytically driven players in the game. During his time with the Rays, he would train at the Driveline Baseball facility and look for any edge to improve on the mound.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has gotten to see that side of Glasnow and praised him for showing a willingness to continue getting better, via Will Aldrich of MLB.com:
“As I’ve gotten to spend more time with Tyler, [I’ve found that] he’s very worldly,” Roberts said. “I think he’s very well-rounded, very intellectual, obviously a very good competitor. I do remember the young Tyler Glasnow, Pittsburgh, big arm.”
Glasnow has come a long way since being selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft. After struggling with inconsistency over parts of four seasons for the team, he was traded to the Rays in 2018 and slowly became the pitcher that he is today.
Glasnow’s talent was never in question, but he struggled to stay healthy for most of tenure with the Rays. That hasn’t been a concern so far with Dodgers’ career as he is on pace to set career highs in both starts and innings pitched.

Despite posting a 3.30 ERA over his last five starts, Glasnow has an 0-3 record largely due to the Dodgers scoring a combined eight runs in those games.
Glasnow views it as a bit of regression to the norm after the offense was scoring often for him early into his Dodgers’ career.
