It is no secret that Los Angeles Dodgers rookie shortstop Corey Seager has been phenomenal this season and he’s the odds-on favorite to win National League Rookie of the Year. Seager may take home additional hardware as he’s among the nominees for the Esurance MLB “Best Rookie” Award.
In his first full season in the Majors, Seager is batting .317/.375/.525 with 25 home runs, 69 RBIs, 100 runs and is tied for second in the NL with 187 hits. He is also among the NL leaders in WAR, ranking fourth at 6.2.
Seager’s competition for the Best Rookie Award includes Detroit Tigers starter Michael Fulmer, New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez and Cleveland Indians outfielder Tyler Naquin. Seager is the only nominee from the NL.
The 22-year-old was one of the Dodgers representatives in the 2016 All-Star game in San Diego after an impressive first half of the season in which he hit .297/.357/.521 with 17 home runs and 42 RBIs in 90 games.
Seager has been even more impressive in the second half, batting .346/.402/.532 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs in 58 games.
The annual Esurance MLB Awards are voted on by media, front-office personnel, retired MLB players, Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) voters, and fans. Categories include “Best Major Leaguer,” “Best Hitter” and “Best Pitcher.”
Voting can be done here and takes place through Nov. 11. Winners will be announced on Nov. 18.
Last year, Vin Scully won the award for Best Call, TV, for the Dodgers’ walk-off win over the Texas Rangers on a balk. The Dodgers’ announcement for Scully’s 2016 return won won the award for Best Video Board Moment.
