The Los Angeles Dodgers completed their comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the National League Championship Series and although he went quiet in the decisive Game 7, Corey Seager was recognized as MVP. It’s the first time Seager has earned NLCS MVP honors in his young career.
It was only Seager’s second time playing in the NLCS, as he missed it in 2017 due to injury. Seager made the most of his return to playing for the pennant, going 9-for-29 with two doubles, five home runs and 11 RBI.
“That was pretty cool. Obviously it wasn’t just me, though,” Seager said of being recognized. “That was a complete team effort. One through 28 went out there and just absolutely grinded through that series. That was a really fun Game 7. It was a test every single night and we were up for it, and we’re up for the next step too.”
He set NLCS records in home runs and RBI, and his seven extra-base hits tied with Javy Lopez (1996) for an all-time record. Furthermore, Seager’s 26 total bases are the second most all-time in an NLCS, trailing only Albert Pujols, who had 28 in 2004.
Seager set Dodgers postseason records for a single series with his five homers in the NLCS, and his six total in the playoffs is tied for the most in one postseason in MLB history.
Last time the Dodgers were in the NLCS, Cody Bellinger earned MVP honors. Although it was his teammate who took home the hardware this time around, Bellinger hit a game-winning home run in the seventh inning of Game 7.
2020 World Series schedule
The Dodgers are back in the World Series for a third time in the past four years, and meet a new yet somewhat familiar opponent in the Tampa Bay Rays. The clubs don’t share postseason history but do have a connection in Andrew Friedman.
Game 1 is set for Tuesday at Globe Life Field, and Game 2 follows on Wednesday. The World Series schedule has off days after Game 2, and if it extends, following Game 5 as well.
