It’s no secret the Los Angeles Dodgers have a high-powered offense, and perhaps their two best bats this season have been Corey Seager and Mookie Betts as they rank Nos. 1 and 2 in baseball, respectively, in hard-hit balls (95 mph-plus) to begin the year.
Unfortunately, both have gone down with injuries in the last couple of games, although they are not believed to be serious.
Seager came into the 2020 season fully healthy for the first time in a while after a few injury-plagued seasons. He has looked like his old self, slashing .361/.425/.694 with three doubles, three home runs and six RBI in nine games.
However, Seager left Saturday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks early due to cramping in his calf that stemmed from fouling a ball off it. He was also apparently dealing with a quad issue, so Dodgers manager Dave Roberts elected to give him a day off on Sunday.
“It was a good day for Corey. Just kind of recovery, treatment. It’s day-to-day, we’ll see [Monday],” Roberts said after the Dodgers shut out the Diamondbacks. “I think best-case scenario we see a DH. It’s all contingent, and we’ve got to err on the side of caution.”
At 7-3, the Dodgers are currently in a first-place tie with the Colorado Rockies in the National League West. The San Diego Padres are just one game behind, making this week’s series at Petco Park a key one.
Even if Seager isn’t able to play the field, hopefully he is able to serve as the designated hitter Monday night in order for his hot bat to get back in the lineup against the Padres.
Betts’ X-ray comes back negative
Betts was also injured in the series against the Diamondbacks, leaving Sunday’s game with a finger issue. Much like Seager, the injury comes at an unfortunate time as Betts had already homered in the game and was 7-for-15 with three doubles, two home runs and three RBI in the series.
Roberts revealed after the game that Betts had an X-ray on his left middle finger that came negative, but his immediate availability also is unclear.
“I think he hurt it when he swung through a pitch. I guess it swelled up during the game, we had him in there for another inning of defense. He’s day-to-day,” Roberts said.
“I guess we’ll know more once we get into San Diego. There was some good swelling. With the swelling, obviously it limited the movement.”
