The Los Angeles Dodgers placed David Price on the 15-day injured list on Sunday due to left wrist inflammation, but there is optimism it won’t end his season.

Price said he has been dealing with the wrist issue for a couple of weeks and it finally got to the point where he needed to stop throwing to give it time to heal. The 37-year-old hasn’t thrown in the last few days and will remain shut down for another four to five days.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Price has also dealt with left shoulder and elbow trouble but felt a burden to keep pitching with so many other pitchers currently on the injured list. With Price now able to get proper rest for his wrist, he is confident it will continue to improve.

“The last road trip was rough for us and the last couple of weeks in our bullpen has been rough,” Price said. “We’ve got Blake (Treinen) back and September helped to get other guys on the roster, so that was good.

“It’ll get better. It already has over the past four or five days, so we’ll just continue to trend in the right direction and I’ll be back out there.”

As a member of the Boston Red Sox, Price underwent surgery in September 2019 on his left wrist after an MRI in August of that year discovered the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) cyst that needed to be removed. He said the current injury feels similar to that.

“It just kind of affects grips,” Price said. “The feeling I have in my hand right now is not something you want to throw with. I’ll just take a little bit of time and I’ll be back out there.”

With time to rest, Price believes he will resume throwing in the next week and hopes he can help the Dodgers during their postseason run.

“It’s a very long season and we have a lot of significant baseball left,” Price said. “I want to be a part of that, so this was the right decision to make for the time being. I’ll be back out there.”

Dave Roberts unsure when David Price will return

Price estimated he would be out for a couple of weeks, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he is unsure of when the left-hander will be activated.

“I do commend David for grinding through being not healthy all year and never complaining about it,” Roberts said. “It just kind of came to a head in Miami. I would say middle of September.”
