After missing most of the season due to a partial tear in the capsule of his right shoulder, Blake Treinen returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen on Sept. 2.

However, he only made two appearances before going on the 15-day injured list with what the team called right shoulder tightness. Despite Treinen just coming back from a slight tear in the capsule of his shoulder, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated the current issue is more in the lat area.

With less than a month remaining in the regular season, Treinen doesn’t have a long timeline to recover, but the 34-year-old said he is improving and his shoulder isn’t bothering him, which gives some hope he’ll be able to return before the postseason, via Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

Treinen’s IL stint was backdated to Sept. 7, which makes Thursday, Sept. 22 the first day he is eligible to return. Treinen last pitched Monday against the San Francisco Giants before he was ruled out in the series finale and the opener with the San Diego Padres.

Treinen has appeared in five games this season, pitching to a 1.80 ERA, 3.91 FIP and 0.40 WHIP in five innings while striking out six and walking one.

Blake Treinen thankful for recovery

When an MRI revealed Treinen had a tear in the capsule of his throwing shoulder, the initial recommendation was season-ending surgery.

However, Treinen didn’t immediately commit to undergoing the procedure and wound up benefitting from scar tissue developing.

“That gave me the miracle I needed. God had healed me over and given me some scarring in my capsule,” Treinen said. “I think it was to the surprise of people around that it happened so soon. So just confirmation that his hand was on it.

“From that point on, very blessed to have the guys that we have in here, organizationally, to get me stronger, keep my mind in the right place and challenging me to push through some stuff.”
