The Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff for the postseason is likely to have a unique feel this year, and some of that hinges on the health of Yency Almonte, Michael Grove, Daniel Hudson and Blake Treinen, among others.

Of the four right-handers, Almonte and Grove appear the most probable to return at any point this year.

Hudson remains on the mend from a sprained MCL in his right knee that was suffered in early July. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said at the time that Hudson faced a long recovery but the team was going to remain hopeful of the veteran pitching again in 2023.

Meanwhile, Treinen began a rehab assignment last month but has only appeared in three games and last pitched on August 29. Roberts said what was ahead for Treinen remained unclear due to lingering trouble with his right shoulder.

Almonte also sustained an MCL sprain in his right knee. Almonte and the Dodgers originally were hopeful for a speedy return but he’s been out since August 12 and last week threw his first bullpen session since the injury.

“It’s a longer shot for the regular season,” Roberts said. “Possible, but there’s still a lot of baseball to be played, talking about the postseason.

“So I think the main thing for Yency is just try to get healthy. And once he’s healthy and feels like he can get Major League hitters out, we’ll see and hope the timeline fits.”

Michael Grove update

Grove landed on the 15-day injured list August 6 and was initially projected to return during the San Diego Padres series last week.

That wound up being pushed back but the 26-year-old is closing in getting activated.

“Michael is fine. He’s going to do an up-down this week, I think it’s Wednesday,” Roberts said. “And the plan is to get Michael back here with us Saturday or Sunday.”

That would leave Grove with one week to potentially earn a spot in the Dodgers bullpen for the postseason.
