Needing to keep pace with the San Francisco Giants, who are is in the midst of a soft stretch in their schedule, the Los Angeles Dodgers nearly let a win slip through their fingers before being rescued by Will Smith in the 10th inning to defeat the New York Mets, 6-4.

They made Tylor Megill labor early and Corey Seager ended a nine-pitch at-bat in the first inning with a two-out RBI double to center field. The extra-base hit was the Dodgers’ second of the inning as Max Muncy had already doubled.

That wound up being only run the Dodgers scored on a hit through nine innings. After singles by Trea Turner and Muncy put runners at the corners with nobody out in the third, Smith’s sacrifice fly extended the Dodgers’ lead to 2-0.

Then a Cody Bellinger single, Billy McKinney walk and Julio Urias hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth inning. Turner came close to hitting his first home run with the Dodgers and instead settled for a sacrifice fly on a drive to the warning track in center field.

The Dodgers’ third sacrifice fly came courtesy of McKinney in the sixth inning. The 4-0 lead appeared it would be enough for a Dodgers bullpen that was lights-out against the Philadelphia Phillies, but the Mets rallied with two outs in the seventh to tie the game.

Momentum swung again in the 10th inning on Smith’s leadoff home run that wound up proving to be the difference for the Dodgers.

“I was just trying to get a ball up in the air to center or right-center, situational hitting to get the guy over,” Smith explained of his at-bat.

Dodgers avoid tying MLB record

With their win the Dodgers snapped a streak of 11 consecutive losses in extra innings, which was one shy of tying an MLB record held by the 1969 Montreal Expos.
