The sports world came together to pay tribute to legendary Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully after he passed away at the age of 94.
Scully began his broadcasting career with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 18, 1950, and his impact on the organization cannot be overstated. His 67 years in the booth represent the longest-tenured broadcaster with one team in professional sports history.
Scully developed relationships with an endless amount of players during his career, including Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. “Vin Scully, well there’s a lot of talk these days about the greatest of all-time,” Koufax said at his statue unveiling in June.
“GOAT used to be a bad thing, now it’s greatest of all-time. Well, that’s the end of the discussion. Vin Scully is the greatest of all-time. Period. No discussion.”
Scully was behind the microphone for an unprecedented 18 no-hitters and three perfect games, four of which came from Koufax.
Scully also called three World Series while working for NBC and was in the booth for many memorable moments, including Hank Aaron’s record-breaking home run and Dwight Clark’s “The Catch” in the 1982 NFC Championship Game.
The Dodgers celebrated Scully with a pregame ceremony and are further honoring him by wearing a patch for the remainder of the 2022 season.
Coinciding with the Dodgers concluding their last homestand, the team began selling limited quantities of the Scully patch at select Dodger Stadium retail stores. Proceeds benefitted charities that Scully supported.
2022 MLB Field of Dreams Game dedicated to Scully
The second annual MLB Field of Dreams Game returned to the famed site in Dyersville, Iowa, with a matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. However, the Dodgers were involved by way of Scully being celebrated.
Scully narrated the famous speech from the “Field of Dreams” movie that was played at the top of the national broadcast on Fox.
Along with Scully’s voice posthumously being used, his image was put on the video board as Cubs and Reds players stretched ahead of first pitch.
