The Los Angeles Dodgers front office has undergone some reshuffling as Brandon Gomes was promoted to general manager, which was a role that had gone unfilled since Farhan Zaidi left the organization to head the San Francisco Giants’ baseball operations in November 2018.
Gomes first joined the Dodgers in November 2016 as pitching coordinator of performance. Gomes’ focus was on assisting Minor League pitchers. He was promoted to director of player development in December 2017, filling a void that was created when the Philadelphia Phillies hired Gabe Kapler as manager.
Gomes then was elevated to vice president and assistant general manager in March 2019. Over recent years he formed a triad with senior vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes and director of baseball development and scouting to handle GM duties in the time after Zaidi left.
Byrnes and Gomes received interest this winter from other clubs in search of lead executives for their respective front offices. Both were expected to remain with the Dodgers, and in Gomes’ case it was suggested a promotion was on the horizon.
Alex Slater, who has held various roles in the Dodgers front office since 2014, is now vice president and assistant general manager. He previously was the team’s director of baseball operations (2017-2021), which came after working as their assistant director of scouting (2015-2017) and senior manager of pro scouting (2014-2015).
The UC Berkeley alumnus joined the Dodgers the same offseason in which Andrew Friedman was named president of baseball operations. Prior to that, Slater was a baseball operations assistant in the San Diego Padres’ professional scouting department from 2009-2014.
Dodgers hire Damon Jones
In addition to promotions within their baseball operations, the Dodgers hired Damon Jones as vice president, assistant general manager and baseball legal counsel.
Jones joins the Dodgers after spending the last two seasons as general counsel for the Washington Football Team. He has over 20 years of experience as a sports, entertainment and media attorney, including 13 seasons with the Washington Nationals as senior vice president and general counsel.
Dodgers promote McDaniel, Albert
Also on Tuesday, the Dodgers promoted Brandon McDaniel to vice president of player performance, and Thomas Albert to head athletic trainer.
