The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Josh Fields from the 60-day disabled list and optioned Yimi Garcia to High-A Rancho Cucamonga ahead of Thursday night’s series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers designated Rob Segedin for assignment in a corresponding move to add Fields back to the 40-man roster.
Fields has missed the last two months due to a shoulder injury, and he was not expected to return until rosters expand on Sept. 1.
The 33-year-old was one of the Dodgers best relievers before going down, posting a 2.36 ERA, 3.82 FIP and 0.93 WHIP in 37 games. He has 28 strikeouts compared to nine walks in 34.1 innings.
Fields pitched in five games with Triple-A Oklahoma City while on a rehab assignment, allowing seven hits and three runs in four total innings.
Garcia being optioned to Rancho Cucamonga is a sign that he likely will not be there very long as the team wants to keep him close to Los Angeles with rosters expanding on Saturday. However, he’ll need to wait 10 days to be recalled unless replacing an injured player.
Garcia has struggled in his limited action with the Dodgers, pitching to a 5.57 ERA, 6.59 FIP and 1.48 WHIP with 17 strikeouts and three walks in 21 innings across 22 appearances. He has also appeared in 14 games with Oklahoma City this season, yielding a 4.30 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 14.2 innings.
