The Los Angeles Dodgers kick off the 2020 season with a three-game series against the rival San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium. The Opening Day matchup will be nationally televised on ESPN as part of a tripleheader, with first pitch at 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 26.
While the preliminary 2020 schedule called for the Dodgers to be off the following day, the three-game set will now resume on Friday, March 27, as opposed to Saturday, March, 28. Thus, L.A. and San Francisco now play Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Dodgers changed course after ESPN decided to pick up the Chicago Cubs-Milwaukee Brewers matchup as its Sunday Night Baseball telecast. As a result, the finale of the three-game series between L.A. and San Francisco will now take place on Saturday rather than Sunday.
While Sunday off days are typically rare for MLB teams, the Dodgers have two next season. Their other one falls on July 12 — the final Sunday before the All-Star break. The off day gives players extra rest leading into the unofficial second half of the regular season.
Dodger Stadium, of course, is the site of the 2020 All-Star Game. The exhibition game takes place on Tuesday, July 14, and it’s the first being held at Chavez Ravine in 40 years.
The Dodgers previously announced that Dodger Stadium will undergo a flurry of upgrades and renovations prior to the 91st edition of the Midsummer Classic.
Among the new features include a plaza in center field, two new sports bars, children’s play area and elevators and escalators, among other amenities and upgrades.
Pavilion renovations will include new restrooms, enclosed bars with views into the bullpen, and be connected to offer fans the opportunity to walk the stadium’s perimeter with ease.
In addition to tweaking the Opening Series, the Dodgers made a similar change to their 2020 Spring Training schedule. The club will now play host to the Cubs in the Cactus League opener on Sunday, Feb. 23 rather than begin on the road against the Giants.
The matchup at Scottsdale Stadium was pushed back to March 6, when the Dodgers will play a day-night doubleheader by also facing the Seattle Mariners that evening at Camelback Ranch.
