The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered their MLB-worst 11th one-run loss this season as they failed to sweep the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon. The Marlins finished out their win with a scoreless inning each from Dylan Floro and Yimi Garcia, who both are former Dodgers.
Floro worked around a pair of two-out singles by Matt Beaty and Gavin Lux to complete a 12th consecutive scoreless appearance. Garcia converted a save in the 3-2 win by stranding Austin Barnes after his base hit with one out in the ninth.
After getting Mookie Betts to ground out to end the game, Garcia was given the baseball and he appeared to purposely toss it toward the Dodgers’ dugout. “I don’t know. Guys were looking, but I was running. I had no idea,” Betts said. “I have nothing to do with any of that.”
Beaty confirmed there was an interpretation that Garcia intended to send the ball in the Dodgers’ direction but the reason was unclear. “I’m not real sure what the intent was behind that. I didn’t see it. A couple other guys saw it,” he said.
“I don’t really know too much details, other than what I’ve heard.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was not aware of Garcia’s actions and he too was perplexed as to what may have prompted it. “I didn’t see that,” Roberts said. “I wouldn’t know the reason why he would take the baseball and throw it towards our dugout.”
Garcia caught the attention of Max Muncy, who threw the ball back toward the mound and discussed the matter with Justin Turner before both went into the clubhouse.
Garcia’s career with Dodgers
Prior to signing with the Marlins in December 2019, the right-handed relief pitcher spent parts of five seasons with the Dodgers. L.A. non-tendered him after the 2019 campaign, making Garcia a free agent for the first time in his career.
Garcia pitched to a 3.66 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 166 strikeouts across 159.2 innings in 165 games for the Dodgers.
