With the Los Angeles Dodgers facing some uncertainty at the shortstop position, this offseason presents plenty of intriguing possibilities with Carlos Correa and Trea Turner among the notable impending free agents.
Correa has yet to technically opt out of his contract with the Minnesota Twins but already publicly stated his intention to do so. Turner just completed a final year of being eligible for salary arbitration before reaching free agency for the first time in his career.
Xander Bogaerts is also expected to decline his $20 million player option with the Boston Red Sox, and Dansby Swanson is due to hit the open market as well.
The Dodgers have interest in re-signing Turner, but according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, view Correa as one of their top options:
No surprise they appear to have landed on the other comparably great free-agent shortstop as an enticing 1A choice: Carlos Correa. They love everything he brings, and thus far don’t seem to have 2017 reservations.
Correa was arguably the top free-agent shortstop available after the 2021 season, but the market never materialized for a longterm contract like what Corey Seager signed with the Texas Rangers.
Instead, Correa signed a three-year, $105.3 million contract with the Twins. The deal included a limited no-trade clause for 2022 and player option this winter. Should Correa reverse course and opt into his contract with the Twins, it would come with a full no-trade clause over the remaining two years.
Correa hit .291/.366/.467 with 24 doubles, 22 home runs and 64 RBI over 163 games this year. He missed time during the season due to right middle finger contusion and also was on the COVID-19 injured list.
Would the Dodgers sign Carlos Correa?
This now marks a second consecutive offseason in which the Dodgers have been linked to Correa. It’s a mild surprise considering not only was he part of the 2017 Houston Astros team that cheated the Dodgers out of a World Series, but Correa was among the more vocal players to take a defiant stance about their misdeeds.
Nevertheless the 28-year-old at one point was believed to be deciding between the Astros and Dodgers before ultimately joining the Twins.
