The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) recently announced several promotions among its senior staff that will further improve the union’s ability to protect players’ rights.
Bruce Meyer, who served as Senior Director, Collective Bargaining & Legal and played an important role in the recent round of collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations, has been promoted to Deputy Executive Director.
Prior to joining the Players Association, Meyer was a senior legal advisor for the NHLPA and a partner at the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges. He will continue advising MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark in his new role.
Ian Penny also has been promoted to Senior Advisor to the Executive Director. He originally joined the Players Association as Labor Counsel in 2010 after serving as General Counsel of the NHLPA and will remain a key legal advisor to Clark.
Matt Nussbaum additionally has been promoted to General Counsel. He first joined the MLBPA in 2011 after three years at the NHLPA and will now assume overall management of the Legal Department.
Furthermore, Kevin Slowey has been promoted to Senior Director, Player Services. He played seven Major League seasons with the Miami Marlins and the Minnesota Twins before joining the Players Association in 2015 as Director of Player Services.
Moreover, Chris Capuano has been promoted to the position of Senior Director, Operations, Business, and Strategy. He joined the MLBPA in 2019 after a 12-year playing career and will continue to work directly with Chief Operating Officer Xavier D. James on a wide range of union matters.
Finally, Jeff Perconte has been promoted to the role of Deputy General Counsel. He joined the MLBPA in 2017 after several years as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago and will now spearhead the union’s internal and external litigation dockets, while collaborating with Nussbaum to oversee the MLBPA’s legal staff.
Clark statement on MLBPA promotions
“Our Players are the best in the world at what they do, and they have a staff working on their behalf that mirrors that same level of excellence,” Clark said in a statement. “These promotions are a further reflection of that standard.”
