The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Matt Davidson to a Minor League contract with an 2022 Spring Training, which marks a reunion for the two sides. He was selected by the Diamondbacks in the first round (No. 35 overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft.

Davidson went on to make his MLB debut with Arizona during the 2013 season, though only appeared in 31 games. He then appeared in a combined 242 games for the Chicago White Sox from 2016-18, and 20 games with the Cincinnati Reds last year.

Over parts of five Major League seasons, he’s hit a combined .223/.292/.433 with 46 doubles, 52 home runs and 154 RBI.

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Davidson to a Minor League contract with an invite to Spring Training this past February.

Although primarily a corner infielder, the Dodgers evaluated Davidson as a potential two-way player. “Right-handed bat off the bench, he can play third, he can play first, and he’s open to the idea of logging some innings out of the ‘pen,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said during Spring Training.

“He’s got the good arm with an openness and willingness. … He just gives us that versatility.”

Davidson was open to the idea of playing the field and pitching for L.A., but the opportunity never came to fruition. He spent the entire season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .294/.365/.629 with 21 doubles and 28 home runs.

Davidson among Dodgers Minor League free agents

While much of the focus is on the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Kenley Jansen, Max Scherzer, Corey Seager and Chris Taylor no longer being under contract, the Dodgers had a slew of Minor Leaguers become free agents as well.

In addition to Davidson, the group includes Nolan Long, Brandon Morrow, Vidal Nuno, James Pazos, Yefry Ramirez, Brock Stewart and Tony Wolters, among others.
