In typical Coors Field fashion, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ bats came alive on Friday night as they hammered out 17 hits, cruising to a 15-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
The Dodgers got on the scoreboard in the second inning as Max Muncy walked to start it off and then came around on a two-run home run off the bat of Cody Bellinger. The blast over the high wall in right-center field was Bellinger’s 11th home run of the season.
Both Muncy and Bellinger have been struggling at the plate in recent weeks, so it was good to see them get going. Bellinger, in particular, had a strong night, finishing 3-for-5 and a triple shy of a cycle.
After a double by Edwin Rios, Gavin Lux followed with a two-run homer that traveled an estimated 453 feet, which is the longest hit by a Dodgers player this season.
The Rockies got three of those runs back, although L.A. was able to break it open with five more runs in the fifth inning. They did so with four-straight run-scoring singles by Chris Taylor, Muncy, Bellinger and AJ Pollock.
The Dodgers then added two more runs in the sixth, with the first coming on a solo home run by Mookie Betts. He now has 16 on the season to lead the National League as he continues to make his MVP case. Corey Seager singled and later scored on Taylor’s double.
L.A. capped off the scoring by adding four more runs in the seventh. Rios and Seager both contributed RBI singles, while Betts capped off his brilliant night with a two-run triple.
Dodgers clinch home-field advantage in Wild Card round
With the win, the Dodgers lowered their magic number to clinch the National League West to four and also clinched home-field advantage for the Wild Card Series in the process.
