The Los Angeles Dodgers were scheduled to host the San Francisco Giants on March 26 for Opening Day, but unfortunately that did not happen as the start of the Major League Baseball season has been postponed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
With no live sports going on, many networks have resorted to re-airing old games over recent weeks. And with Opening Day coming and going, many of those decided to focus on past Opening Day games.
For the Dodgers, one of their best openers came just a year ago when they slugged a franchise-record eight home runs in a 12-5 victory over Zack Greinke and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
One of those home runs came off the bat of Max Muncy, who has developed into an All-Star the last couple of years after being released by the Oakland Athletics and signing a Minor League with the Dodgers.
The 2019 season marked Muncy’s first career MLB Opening Day, and in an interview on the “Petros and Money Show” on AM 570 L.A. Sports, he discussed how special that home run was to him:
“For me, it was pretty special because that was actually my first Opening Day I’ve ever been a part of at the big league level. So for me, that made it really, really special. Being able to be part of a big team win like that was really, really cool.”
Muncy hit a walk-off home run in the 18th inning of Game 3 of the World Series in 2018, so it speaks volumes to hear him talk about his Opening Day long ball in the manner that he did.
His seventh-inning home run off Matt Koch was the sixth of eight on the day for the Dodgers, and it was a signal of another great year to come for Muncy.
In 141 games in 2019, Muncy hit .251/.374/.515 with 35 home runs, 101 runs scored and 98 RBI. He has now hit 35 home runs apiece in each of the last two seasons and will look to top that in 2020 whenever the season is able to get underway.
