The injury bug continued for the Los Angeles Dodgers as Teoscar Hernández was forced to exit Friday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians in the first inning due to a left ankle/foot injury.

With a runner on first base and two outs, Hernández was hit in the left ankle by an 81 mph slider. He fell down in pain and grabbed his ankle while wincing in pain.

Hernández slowly walked to first base, continuing to show serious pain, with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and head trainer Thomas Albert. Hernández attempted to test his ankle out with a very subtle jog before he had to come out of the game.

Chris Taylor entered as a pinch-runner for Hernández and remained in the game in left field. The Dodgers announced Hernández was removed because of a left foot contusion.

Hernández entered the night as one of the key players for the Dodgers this season, avoiding the injured list while appearing in 137 games.

Hernández has hit .266/.330/.488 with 28 home runs and 87 RBI while also picking up 10 stolen bases with a 127 wRC+ and 2.8 WAR.

If Hernández is to miss any significant time, that could perhaps open an opportunity for top Dodgers prospect Dalton Rushing, who has been playing left field with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Any sort of Hernández injury would also create some concern for the Dodgers as less than one month remains in the regular season.

Friday was costly for the Dodgers as they placed Gavin Stone on the 15-day injured list because of right shoulder inflammation. Stone had been the only member of the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation to avoid the IL this season.
