Fresh off winning two close games, the Los Angeles Dodgers did not find that same success in the third game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, losing 14-3 after falling into a huge deficit early.
The Dodgers nearly got on the board in the first inning after a single from Mookie Betts when Freddie Freeman launched a ball into the gap. However, it was tracked down by Jake McCarthy to take away a run, and things just went downhill from there.
Justin Wrobleski was recalled prior to the game as a spot starter, and he turned in the worst outing of his career thanks to an awful second inning.
Randal Grichuk doubled to start off the second inning and with one out, the Diamondbacks manufactured four straight hits with three singles and a double that put them up 4-0.
Corbin Carroll followed by drawing a walk before Wrobleski recorded the second out, but that wasn’t all for the D-Backs. Josh Bell singled home a run to make it a 5-0 game, and Randal Grichuk followed with a two-run homer to make it an 8-0 game.
The Diamondbacks batted around on their way to scoring eight runs in the second inning, and from that point, that game was essentially over.
Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman all struck out in the third inning, and that prompted manager Dave Roberts to put up the white flag, replacing Betts, Freeman and Teoscar Hernández with Andy Pages, Kiké Hernández and Chris Taylor.
The Diamondbacks went on to score two more runs off Wrobleski with a solo home run by Eugenio Suarez in the third and a pair of singles in the sixth.
Although the damage was already done, Wrobleski was still able to give the Dodgers 5.1 innings. He was asked to continue pitching to preserve the bullpen so the Dodgers can focus on getting a win on Monday in the series finale.
In his 5.1 innings, Wrobleski allowed 10 hits, struck out two and walked two while giving up the 10 earned runs. He threw 99 pitches, including more than 40 in that second inning.
Arizona added another two runs in the seventh inning against Michael Grove with Tommy Edman making a throwing error, and another two runs against Kiké Hernández, who pitched the eighth for the Dodgers.
Dodgers offense does little against Diamondbacks
The Dodgers scored their first run in the fourth inning when Tommy Edman hit an RBI groundout after Chris Taylor started the inning with a single and Gavin Lux doubled.
They added two more in the sixth on a ground out from Kevin Kiermaier and a single from Austin Barnes after Lux walked and Edman singled to begin the inning.
The Dodgers had a few other opportunities to score, but failed to capitalize each time.
