With just over a week until the July 30 trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers are widely expected to address their starting rotation given the injuries they have had to endure.
An earlier report suggested that the Dodgers want to add a top-tier arm, with Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox being floated as a potential option. L.A. was said to make an offer for the left-hander, but quickly got turned down.
A deal for Crochet could remain in play, but the Dodgers are considering all options.
Another possibility has emerged in Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who is drawing interest from the Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles, among other teams.
Skubal would be an excellent addition to any World Series contender, but the Tigers will reportedly only consider trading him if they are blown away by an offer, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today:
It’s a longshot that Skubal will be traded, but the Tigers are listening, and have told teams they will move him only if they are overwhelmed by an offer.
Skubal, 27, is under team control through the 2026 season and would cost the acquiring team multiple top prospects. The Dodgers have the necessary prospects to complete a blockbuster trade, but the Orioles farm system is considered a stronger group.
For L.A., it would likely require parting ways with some combination of Bobby Miller, Gavin Stone, Dalton Rushing, Josue De Paula, River Ryan, Emmet Sheehan, Dustin May and others along those lines.
Tarik Skubal a legitimate ace
Skubal broke out in a limited number of appearances during the 2023 season and has continued to build on that success this year.
He went 10-3 with a 2.41 ERA and 2.56 FIP, 0.88 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts per nine in 116 innings pitched during the first half en route to his first career All-Star Game appearance.
Over the past two seasons, Skubal has a 2.57 ERA, 2.33 FIP, 11.09 strikeouts per nine, 1.60 walks per nine and 6.8 WAR.
If acquired by the Dodgers, he would slot at the top of a rotation that could potentially include Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the postseason.
