The Los Angeles Dodgers selected shortstop Kellon Lindsey out of Hardee High School in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. Lindsey was drafted by the Dodgers with the No. 23 overall pick.
Lindsey is a former quarterback who has 80-grade run times that are comparable to Trea Turner and rose up draft boards after committing to baseball full-time. Among other areas, Lindsey improved defensively during the spring and is expected to remain capable of sticking at shortstop.
There are areas for growth at the plate and some power could come with Lindsey adding on some strength. Lindsey stands 6’2 and is listed at 175 lbs. The 18-year-old is verbally committed to attend the University of Florida.
It’s the only selection the Dodgers hold on the first day of this year’s Draft due to forfeiting their second-round pick (and fifth round) as part of penalties related to last season’s payroll and signing Shohei Ohtani after he rejected a qualifying offer from the Los Angeles Angels.
The Dodgers have a total of 18 picks in the 2024 MLB Draft, resuming in the third round, plus the fourth and rounds 6-20.
The last time the Dodgers had the 23rd overall pick in the MLB Draft, they selected Jeren Kendall from Vanderbilt in 2017. He played five years in the Dodgers farm system before retiring after the 2022 season.
The No. 23 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft comes with a $3,676,400 slot value. Overall, the Dodgers have a bonus pool of $6,114,700 for the 2024 Draft, which is 29th among all teams and ahead of only the Houston Astros.
Bonus pools are calculated by adding the slot values of every pick through the first 10 rounds.
Any bonus amount a player receives that exceeds $125,000 for draft picks made after the 10th round also count against the pool money.
Consequences for exceeding that allotment include a 75% tax on any overage amount that is up to 5% over the pool. If a team goes more than 5% over their pool, they lose their first-round pick in the next year’s draft.
