The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Ryan Brasier to the 60-day injured list as the corresponding move for a minor trade they made on Thursday for some pitching depth.
Brasier was originally placed on the 10-day injured list on April 29, retroactive to April 28, with a right calf strain. Now on the 60-day IL, the earliest he can return is June 27, but that might be an optimistic timeline still.
The 36-year-old suffered his calf strain while going through pregame warmups, and it was expected to keep him out for a while.
Brasier dealt with the same issue in April 2021, except it was a left calf strain rather than on his right calf. That also led to him going on the 60-day IL, keeping him out more than two months.
The right-hander recently threw a bullpen session, but he is still feeling some discomfort in his calf. “He just got here today, got back today,” Roberts said. “I’ll kind of give him a fly by, but threw a ‘pen,” Roberts said.
“Still feel some tentativeness with the calf, but the arm’s in good shape. So. I just don’t know what that looks like.”
Brasier appeared in 12 games for the Dodgers, striking out 12 batters in 11.2 innings with a 4.63 ERA. He allowed runs in four of his appearances, including three on April 12.
Now in his second season with the Dodgers, Brasier has gone a combined 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 51 games. He signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Dodgers on Feb. 8, 2024.
The Texas native has been in the Majors parts of eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (2013), Boston Red Sox (2018-2023) and Dodgers (2023-24), going a combined 9-8 with a 3.91 ERA and 10 saves.
José Hernández replaces Ryan Brasier on 40-man roster
The Dodgers acquired left-hander Jose Hernandez from the Pittsburgh Pirates and added him to their 40-man roster, replacing Brasier.
Hernandez was designated for assignment on June 11 after appearing in seven games for the Pirates. He was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He has pitched parts of two seasons with the Pirates, posting a 2-4 record with a 4.82 ERA in 56 innings and 66 strikeouts.
The 26-year-old was originally signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on May 12, 2016 and was acquired by the Pirates on December 7, 2022 in the the Rule 5 Draft.
