The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Travis Swaggerty to a Minor League deal and assigned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Presumably, the deal includes an invite to Spring Training, but the Dodgers have yet to announce any non-roster invitees to Major League camp for 2024.
The left-handed hitting outfielder was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round, 10th overall, in the 2018 MLB Draft.
Swaggerty made his MLB debut with the Pirates on June 7, 2022, appearing in just five games while hitting .111/.111/.111 (one single in nine at-bats).
Swaggerty spent all of 2023 in the Minor Leagues, with most of his time coming at the the Triple-A level, where he batted .200/.278/.369 across 65 games.
The Pirates released Swaggerty on July 19 and he went on to sign a Minor League deal with the Chicago White Sox in the middle of August.
The White Sox assigned him to their Arizona Complex League but released him one month later.
During the 2020 season, Swaggerty was ranked as the No. 61 overall prospect in MLB by FanGraphs, with a future grade of 50 or higher on all his tools, including a 60 raw power, 65 run, 60 fielding and 60 throwing grade.
Despite his raw tools suggesting high upside, Swaggerty has been unable to put all his tools together aside from two strong showings at the Single-A level in 2018 and 2019.
Across his Minor League career, the 26-year-old has hit .250 /.341/.388 with 27 home runs, 127 RBI, 184 runs scored and 59 stolen bases in 314 games.
Travis Swaggerty joins Austin Beck among recent Dodgers signings
Swaggerty joins Austin Beck as a former highly-touted prospect to sign a deal with the Dodgers as they look to revitalize their career.
Beck was originally a first-round pick, sixth overall, by the Oakland Atheltics in the 2017 MLB Draft. He signed a franchise-record $5.303 million contract with the A’s and had been with their organization since then, but elected free agency in early November.
Over his Minor League career, Beck has slashed .252/.303/.384 with 31 home runs, 206 RBI and 174 runs scored across 394 games.
