MLB free agency will begin the morning after the 2023 World Series concludes, which for the Los Angeles Dodgers is going to amount to 12 players no longer being under contract.
The group of Dodgers free agents is expected to comprise of Ryan Brasier, Kiké Hernández, Jason Heyward, Clayton Kershaw, Jake Marisnick, J.D. Martinez, Shelby Miller, Jimmy Nelson, David Peralta, Amed Rosario, Julio Urías and Kolten Wong.
The list could grow to include other players depending on the team’s option and tender decisions later in the offseason.
The Dodgers’ only players under guaranteed contracts for the 2024 season are Austin Barnes, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Tony Gonsolin, Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor.
Dodgers free agents
Ryan Brasier
Brasier gave a much-needed boost to the bullpen after signing with the Dodgers in June and could conceivably return to L.A. on a short-term contract.
Kiké Hernández
The Dodgers reunited with Hernández after acquiring him from the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline, and the utility man put up better offensive numbers while playing seven different positions.
Jason Heyward
Heyward enjoyed a resurgent year with the Dodgers and also emerged as an important leader in the clubhouse as he was voted the winner of the 2023 Roy Campanella Award.
Clayton Kershaw
An unspecified left shoulder injury limited Kershaw for most of the second half, but he was still effective when healthy. Like recent offseasons, Kershaw’s options in free agency figure to be re-signing with the Dodgers, joining his hometown Texas Rangers or retiring.
Jake Marisnick
In search of a right-handed bat, the Dodgers signed Marisnick to a one-year contract in July. However, the veteran only appeared in four games before a left hamstring injury ended his season.
J.D. Martinez
Martinez missed a stretch of games in the second half due to left groin/adductor tightness, but was one of the Dodgers’ more productive hitters this season as he eclipsed 30 home runs and 100 RBI for the first time since 2019.
Shelby Miller
Miller was one of the Dodgers’ most trusted arms in the bullpen and likely has earned himself a multi-year contract in free agency.
Jimmy Nelson
Nelson was unable to pitch at the Major League level for a second consecutive season due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery in 2021, but appeared on the mound for two of the Dodgers’ Minor League affiliates, and presumably will attempt another comeback next year.
David Peralta
Peralta didn’t provide much in the way of offense, but he was a solid contributor defensively and a key figure in the Dodgers clubhouse.
Amed Rosario
The Dodgers added Rosario in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians at the deadline, and he hit for more power while shoring up the middle infield positions.
Julio Urías
Urías was a staple of the Dodgers starting rotation until his season came to an abrupt end in early September after being arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and going on administrative leave.
Kolten Wong
Wong signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers in August and joined the team when rosters expanded the following month. The veteran second baseman found success and earned a spot on the National League Division Series roster.
