Freddie Freeman was named National League Player of the Week for July 31-August 6, marking a fourth time he’s received the honor since signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency and ninth time in his career.

Freeman additionally earned NL Player of the Month honors for May 2023 and last September.

Max Muncy is the only other member of the Dodgers to win NL Player of the Week honors this season, which he did for April 17-23.

Freeman had 13 hits in 26 at-bats over the Dodgers’ six games during the period he was recognized for. The 33-year-old batted .500/.536/.923 with five doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and three stolen bases in that span.

Moreover, Freeman had four multi-hit games as he paired with Mookie Betts to help lead the Dodgers to a 5-1 record. Betts was mentioned among the noteworthy performances for NL Player of the Week consideration.

Overall this season, Freeman entered the series finale against the San Diego Padres batting .339/.416/.595 with 40 doubles, 23 home runs and 80 RBI.

Freeman leads the Majors in doubles, and ranks first among NL leaders in total bases (262), extra-base hits (65), OPS+ (169) and wRC+ (172). He’s second in the NL in runs scored (97), RBI (80), slugging percentage, on-base plus slugging (1.011).

2023 NL MVP race: Freddie Freeman

Freeman’s prolific season has him in the thick of the 2023 NL MVP race, but potentially trailing former Atlanta Braves teammate Ronald Acuña Jr.

“I know Acuña is doing his thing over there, which is really impressive. But if you look at Freddie’s ability to post, drive in runs, hit for average, slug, he’s definitely in the MVP conversation,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said last week.

“And Mookie is not far behind.”

Freeman won the 2020 NL MVP Award with the Braves.
