Jason Heyward provided a big swing as part of a five-run second inning that was enough for the Los Angeles Dodgers to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, 10-3, for a second consecutive win.
The Dodgers improved to 5-1 on their road trip, have won four series in a row and can complete a sweep on getaway day at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Meanwhile, the Orioles have now lost two in a row since the Dodgers snapped their season-best eight-game winning streak.
L.A. got to Tyler Wells in the second inning, beginning with J.D. Martinez drawing a leadoff walk and David Peralta following with a single. Heyward then broke the scoreless tie with a three-run home run.
Although Heyward started a fifth consecutive game, that wound up being his only at-bat of the night. Jake Marisnick pinch-hit for Heyward in the third inning due to the Orioles having a southpaw on the mound. Marisnick was removed in the bottom of the fourth due to left hamstring tightness.
Prior to that point, RBI singles from Freddie Freeman and Will Smith capped off the big second inning for the Dodgers, as the two combined for seven hits. Freeman extended his MLB-leading on-base streak to 19 games.
The Dodgers went quiet after their big inning until breaking the game open in the seventh. Consecutive walks led to a double steal and run scoring on Adley Rutschman’s throwing error.
Mookie Betts later scored when Max Muncy reached on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, and J.D. Martinez had the Dodgers’ only hit in the inning when he slapped an RBI single into right field.
Michael Grove, Dodgers pitching shines
Despite the lineup going quiet during the middle innings, Michael Grove and the Dodgers bullpen upheld the initial 5-0 lead.
Grove allowed just one run over five-plus innings and was picked up by Yency Almonte. Grove exited with runners on first base and second base, but Almonte stranded both inherited runners to complete a fourth consecutive scoreless appearance.
Phil Bickford was charged with a run over his 1.1 innings of work, and the Orioles also scored against Nick Robertson, but the game was well in hand by that point.
