The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Tayler Scott to the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations after he was claimed off waivers. Scott was designated for assignment on June 17.
That came as the corresponding move to make room on the 40-man and active rosters for the Dodgers calling up Bryan Hudson from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Scott originally joined the Dodgers roster on May 22 when Clayton Kershaw was placed on the bereavement list. He remained with the team for just three days, getting sent back to Oklahoma City when the Dodgers activated Kershaw.
Scott rejoined the Dodgers a week later as a corresponding move to Phil Bickford being put on the 15-day injured list. That marked the start of being shuffled on and off the roster.
The Dodgers optioned Scott on June 6, only to recall him two days later when Noah Syndergaard landed on the 15-day IL.
Scott previously spent time in the Majors with the Seattle Mariners (2019), Baltimore Orioles (2019) and San Diego Padres (2022). Including his stint with the Dodgers, Scott is a combined 0-1 with an 10.75 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 27 Major League games (two starts).
Scott joins Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, Justin Turner and Alex Verdugo as players who were with the Dodgers in recent seasons and now are on the Red Sox roster.
The Red Sox transferred John Schreiber to the 60-day IL in order to make room for Scott on their 40-man roster.
Tayler Scott’s career with Dodgers
Scott had been part of the Dodgers organization since signing a Minor League contract on January 3, 2023. The 31-year-old pitched to a 9.00 ERA over six appearances for the Dodgers.
Scott and Gift Ngoepe are the only South African-born players in MLB history. Ngoepe made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017 and played in 13 games for the Toronto Blue Jays the following year.
The Chicago Cubs selected Scott in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
