Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Austin Gauthier was named the Midwest League Player of the Week for May 22-28. It’s his second time winning the award this season as he previously earned the honor for the week of May 1-7.
Gauthier batted .350/.519/.600 with two doubles, one home run, eight RBI, seven walks and six runs scored in six games over the past week. He has since been promoted to Double-A Tulsa and went 1-for-4 in his debut with the Drillers.
The Dodgers signed Gauthier as an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra University in 2021. He hit a stellar .365/.487/.568 with 10 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 25 RBI in 40 games for the Loons this season.
The 24-year-old left the Midwest League as the leader in batting average, on-base percentage, on-base plus slugging (1.055) and runs scored (39). He’s second in hits (54) and third in walks (36), and his .484 on-base percentage is the fourth-highest in the Minors.
Gauthier has seen time at third base, second base, left field, shortstop and designated hitter this season, and his ability to play all over the diamond is something the Dodgers place a strong emphasis with their prospects.
However, Gauthier’s opportunities playing shortstop for the Drillers may be reduced due to the presence of Eddys Leonard.
