Jason Heyward was intertwined on multiple levels with the Los Angeles Dodgers gathering at the Jackie Robinson statue in the center field plaza of Dodger Stadium for a third consecutive Jackie Robinson Day.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts began the tradition in 2021, and last year was accompanied by David Robinson addressing players about his father’s legacy and mission for equality. This season, the Chicago Cubs stood with the Dodgers, and Heyward spoke to his former and current teammates about the impact Robinson had on his life.
“Amazing opportunity,” Heyward said after delivering his powerful message. “I feel like timing is everything, for all of us in every walk of life. Super cool, 14-year Major Leaguer, to have a chance to address everyone that came out here wanting to show support, pay homage and acknowledge Jackie Robinson Day.”
Heyward and Robinson were both born in Georgia, and the veteran outfielder was committed to attend UCLA, where the Dodgers icon starred after attending Muir High School in Pasadena.
“The Jackie Robinson story is the first story that I read as a kid. My parents got me two Jackie Robinson books,” Heyward recalled. “I remember reading them both and learning a lot about him. Little did I know, it was going to lead me on a long path of following his footsteps.
“Just wanted to be great, be the best teammate I could be, the best ballplayer I could be, work hard and things will come my way. Growing up in Georgia, understanding that there were going to be some things that were going to be different and unique about that situation.
“I’m fortunate enough to have support from teammates, family, all those things. Those different people from different walks of life, different nationalities, ethnicities, led me here today to address a group where everyone is different.”
Hours after delivering the heartfelt message, Heyward gave another speech to the Dodger Stadium crowd prior to first pitch and reiterated his excitement over being with the Dodgers for Jackie Robinson Day.
Jason Heyward commends Jackie Robinson Foundation
While a member of the Cubs last season, Heyward asked Ross to speak with the team about donating to the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
“The foundation and his family, their sacrifices, I know it’s time consuming,” Heyward said. “But they really care.”
