While the Los Angeles Dodgers were holding an intrasquad game at Camelback Ranch, a historic winter storm rolled into California on Thursday, bringing with it frigid temperatures, rain, hail and snow.
The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for the Los Angeles, Ventura and San Bernardino County mountains beginning early Friday, which was a rarity. They cautioned heavy snow, high winds and limited visibility would take effect throughout the weekend as the California storm batters the state.
The chilly conditions and rainfall made for a rarity at Dodger Stadium, where Dodgers team photographer Carrie Giordano captured video of a hail storm.
In Giordano’s clip posted to Instagram, the Dodger Stadium outfield grass nearly appears to be frozen over as pellets of hail fall.
With more inclement weather in the forecast, it’s plausible Dodger Stadium will see more hail at some point during the weekend.
Fortunately for the Dodgers and their fans, the team is still one month from playing games at Chavez Ravine when the exhibition Freeway Series begins March 26.
Dodger Stadium rainout history
Since Dodger Stadium opened in April 1962, there have only been 17 rainouts in its history. The last rainout at Dodger Stadium came April 17, 2000, against the Houston Astros. From that date to 2018, the Dodgers played 1,471 consecutive home games without a rainout, which is the longest streak in MLB history.
The last rain delay at Dodger Stadium was April 7, 2015, when the San Diego Padres were in town. It was the first rain delay at Chavez Ravine since May 23, 2008.
On April 21, 1967, a scheduled against the St. Louis Cardinals was postponed due to rain, snapping a streak of 410 consecutive contests at Dodger Stadium without a washout since it opened.
