Los Angeles Dodgers teammates Tyler Anderson and Mookie Betts were named 2022 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists. Last year the team had Max Muncy, AJ Pollock and Betts included among the top three players at their respective positions.
The Dodgers’ last Gold Glove Award winner was Betts for the 2020 season.
Gold Glove Award winners are calculated based on a combination of voting by managers and coaches, and approximately 25% of the SABR Defensive Index (SDI). The 2022 season is the first time utility players have been included among finalists.
Only the manager and six coaches from each club vote, for a total of seven submissions per team. Managers and coaches cannot vote for their own players and can only submit ballots for those in their same league.
In 2013, Rawlings added the SABR Defensive Index (SDI) to the Gold Glove Award selection process, which comprises approximately 25% of the overall selection total, with the managers’ and coaches’ votes continuing to carry the majority.
For pitchers to qualify as a finalist, they must have logged at least 138 innings by his team’s 138th game of the season. Anderson finished the year with 178.2 innings pitched over 30 games (28 starts).
Through August 28, the SABR Defensive Index had Anderson leading all National League pitchers with a 4.0 mark. That was well ahead of Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen, who had a 2.5 SDI up to that point.
Anderson’s Defensive Runs Saved (5) was third-best among NL pitchers. It was bested only by the Philadelphia Phillies’ Ranger Suárez (9) and New York Mets’ Taijuan Walker (6), but neither qualified to be a finalist.
Instead, Anderson is up against Max Fried of the Atlanta Braves, and Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes. Fried has won back-to-back Gold Glove Awards. This marks Anderson’s first time being a finalist.
Zack Greinke in 2015 is the last Dodgers pitcher to win a Gold Glove Award.
Meanwhile, all infielders and outfielders must have played in the field for at least 698 total innings through his team’s 138th game. That equates to playing the field for approximately 7.5 innings per game in approximately 67% of games by his team’s 138th to ensure that only full-time players are considered.
Betts led NL right fielders in Total Zone Rating (31), and was second in Ultimate Zone Rating (12.5), Outs Above Average (5) and Defensive Runs Saved (15). He also was a leader in SDI through Aug. 28, with 11.19.
Betts has won five Gold Glove Awards in his career, each of which came consecutively from 2016-2020. This season he is up against Arizona Diamondbacks’ Daulton Varsho and Juan Soto of the San Diego Padres.
