When the Los Angeles Dodgers returned from their road trip it was with an optimistic outlook for Tony Gonsolin, Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen, each of whom remains on the 15-day injured list.
Graterol and Treinen were due to participate in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium, with the latter likely being activated Thursday if all went well. Despite initial optimism that was the case, it is now Graterol who is expected to be reinstated for the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to Treinen not recovering from shoulder soreness.
“I think just kind of where Blake is at versus where Brusdar is at, I think Brusdar is ready for [Thursday] and we’ll just kind of kick the can a little bit with Blake,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
“He’s just not bouncing back the way any of us would have hoped. So that’s kind of my hesitancy a little bit.”
Treinen has only appeared in five games this season, pitching to a 1.80 ERA and 0.40 WHIP over five innings. He missed nearly five months while recovering from a partial tear in his right shoulder that the Dodgers initially believed would require season-ending surgery.
However, because scar tissue quickly developed, Treinen was able to avoid surgery in favor of rest and a rehab program. “That gave me the miracle I needed,” Treinen said upon being activated off the 60-day IL.
“God had healed me over and given me some scarring in my capsule,” Treinen said. “I think it was to the surprise of people around that it happened so soon. So just confirmation that his hand was on it.
“From that point on, very blessed to have the guys that we have in here, organizationally, to get me stronger, keep my mind in the right place and challenging me to push through some stuff.”
Treinen and the Dodgers to this point have maintained the shoulder tightness was not related to the capsule injury.
Will Blake Treinen return for postseason?
With only two weeks remaining in the regular season, Treinen being available for the playoffs now appears to be in jeopardy.
Should he not be included on the Dodgers’ postseason roster, that would place greater emphasis on Tommy Kahnle remaining healthy and pitching well, and Yency Almonte returning from his right elbow trouble.
Almonte currently is on rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City and is expected to make at least two more appearances this weekend.
