When the Los Angeles Dodgers faced Corbin Burnes last week, they didn’t score off the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner until the sixth inning. On Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, they chased him in the fourth inning of a 10-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Dodgers took an early lead thanks to Mookie Betts’ leadoff double setting the table in the bottom of the first. He advanced to third base and later scored on Freddie Freeman’s two-out single.
The Dodgers’ lead grew when Trayce Thompson added to what’s been an impressive showing by hitting a three-run home run halfway up the pavilion in left field. Thompson provided more offense with an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Trea Turner and Freeman each drove a run in on a base hit as well.
Freeman’s RBI single came off Brent Suter, but the run was charged to Burnes. His book closed at seven earned runs allowed, an outing similar to Miami Marlins ace and 2022 Cy Young Award favorite Sandy Alcántara had on Sunday.
The run support was more than enough for Tony Gonsolin. He pitched just five innings as the Dodgers took advantage of the comfortable lead to get Gonsolin rest. The lone run he allowed came on a Jonathan Davis single in the fifth inning.
Gonsolin improved to 16-1 on the season and lowered his National League-leading ERA to 2.10. Gonsolin went into the matchup with the best ERA in the NL thanks to the Dodgers scoring five runs against Alcántara.
With the game already in hand, the Dodgers scored three runs in the eighth inning against Brewers catcher Victor Caratini, who was one of two position players to pitch on the night. Hanser Alberto took the mound for the Dodgers in the ninth inning and retired the side in order.
Dodgers excelling against quality pitching
Tuesday was the latest example of the Dodgers finding success against frontline starters, which manager Dave Roberts has touted as being key with respect to their postseason hopes. However, the Dodgers remain unable to solve Eric Lauer.
The southpaw is 7-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 11 career starts against the Dodgers, and 23-28 with a 4.31 ERA in other games.
