The Los Angeles Dodgers have opened a 3.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West standings, and now are in position to clinch the series at Dodger Stadium. Doing so would also extend the Dodgers’ modest winning streak to three games.
Tyler Anderson takes the mound as he tries to get back on track since throwing a career-high 123 pitches in pursuit of a no-hitter on June 15. Anderson followed that by allowing a combined eight runs (seven earned) in his past two starts.
Anderson faces the Padres for a second time this season, with the first outing representing the start of his time in the Dodgers’ rotation. Anderson enters 8-1 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 14 games (12 starts) this year.
The Padres counter with Yu Darvish, who similarly makes a second start against the Dodgers this season. When Darvish last faced L.A., he allowed just one hit and collected seven strikeouts over six shutout innings at Petco Park on April 23.
Darvish didn’t factor into the decision of the Padres’ 3-2 win. That resides as the Dodgers’ lone loss to the Padres in their last 14 meetings. L.A. is 16-8 against San Diego since the start of the 2021 season.
Overall this season, Darvish is 7-3 with a 3.26 ERA. He’s coming off a start in which the Philadelphia Phillies scored three runs, but Darvish otherwise held opponents to one earned run or fewer in three outings during June.
