The Los Angeles Dodgers made their first splash in free agency since the MLB lockout ended by reportedly agreeing to a one-year contract with Clayton Kershaw as speculation involving Freddie Freeman continues to persist.
Despite a former teammate recently suggesting Kershaw was likely to decide between joining his hometown Texas Rangers or retiring, there was a widespread expectation throughout baseball the left-hander was leaning toward re-signing with the Dodgers.
Matters appear to be much more fluid with Freeman, who can include the Atlanta Braves, Dodgers and New York Yankees among his most prominent suitors.
“I would love to see Freddie Freeman in a Dodger uniform. Who wouldn’t? He’s a heck of a ballplayer,” manager Dave Roberts answered when asked about the Dodgers’ potential interest in the 32-year-old.
“He’s put himself in a situation to be a free agent, so he’s earned that right and the opportunity to be courted by other teams and to see what’s best for him and his family. Certainly in the conversation for us, but ultimately it’s going to be his decision.”
At the beginning of free agency most anticipated Freeman and the Braves quickly working toward a new contract. However, Atlanta reportedly is against extending to a sixth year that Freeman desires with his deal.
That’s led to reported frustration with the Braves front office and opened up the possibility he leaves the franchise that selected him in the second round of the 2007 MLB Draft.
Muncy willing to change positions for Freeman
As speculation of Freeman possibly signing with the Dodgers has persisted, Alex Wood noted on Twitter he hoped the All-Star first baseman would not end up in the National League West. That drew a response from Justin Turner, who naturally disagreed.
The signing of Freeman would most directly impact Max Muncy, who said he would happily make a position change to second base in order to add the Southern California native to the roster.
