The 2021-2022 international signing period is set to begin on January 15 and run through December 15. It’s the second consecutive year the period will start in January as opposed to July.
According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, the Los Angeles Dodgers will have $4,644,000 to spend when the period officially commences on Saturday.
That puts them alongside the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, L.A. Angels, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals.
Meanwhile, teams that were given a Competitive Balance Pick in Round B of the MLB Draft received a bonus pool of $6,262,600. The group includes the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals.
Clubs that were given a Competitive Balance Pick in Round A of the MLB Draft received a bonus pool of $5,721,500. The group includes the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays.
Some teams lost money for exceeding the luxury tax threshold and/or signing a Major League free agent who rejected a qualifying offer. For the second year in a row, clubs will not be allowed to trade bonus pool space.
Eligible players who can sign with a Major League team during the 2021-22 international signing period must have been born between Sept. 1, 2004, and Aug. 31, 2005. Players also have to be registered with Major League Baseball in order to sign.
The Dodgers agreed to terms with 22 players on the first day of the international signing period last year, including shortstop Wilman Diaz, who was ranked the No. 3 prospect.
Dodgers linked to infielder Samuel Muñoz
The Dodgers are considered the favorite to sign Samuel Muñoz on January 15, a shortstop out of the Dominican Republic who is a consensus top 50 international prospect.
