Several Los Angeles Dodgers players have thanked fans and reflected on the season in social media posts, and Tony Gonsolin joined a list that includes Mookie Betts, Clayton Kershaw and Justin Turner, among others.

In his Instagram post, Gonsolin also made mention of having a better 2022 season on an individual level. Gonsolin reported to Spring Training this year with an opportunity to compete for the final spot in the starting rotation.

That ultimately went to Dustin May, and Gonsolin was expected to be part of a versatile and deep Dodgers bullpen. However, his season was halted before it ever truly began as Gonsolin was forced to the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation prior to throwing a single pitch.

Gonsolin was later transferred to the 60-day IL and didn’t return until June 9. He struggled upon initially returning and then was mired in inconsistency.

Gonsolin wound up needing a second stint on the IL at the end of July because of more right shoulder trouble, but said he made a full recovery after getting activated Sept. 9.

Despite the injuries and struggles to provide much length Gonsolin finished a respectable 4-1 with a 3.23 ERA across 15 games (13 starts). However, his 1.35 WHIP and 4.54 FIP were more indicative of the entire body of work.

Come the postseason, the Dodgers again leaned on Gonsolin’s versatility as he was used out of the bullpen for three relief appearances against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series.

Gonsolin’s role for 2022

Dependent on how the offseason unfolds for the Dodgers on the starting pitching front, Gonsolin could easily find himself in the Opening Day rotation for 2022. If so, it would mark his first time holding such a role for a full season.
