The Los Angeles Dodgers cruised to an 8-3 win to complete a sweep of the San Diego Padres on Thursday in a game that featured a combined seven home runs between the two teams.
Of all the blasts, the one that drew the most attention was Fernando Tatis Jr.’s two-run shot in the top of the fifth inning off Tony Gonsolin that carried out of Dodger Stadium.
Tatis’ drive to the left-center field pavilion hit off the back of the roof and rolled into the plaza, traveling an estimated 467 feet.
It was Tatis’ National League-leading 42nd home run of the season and he became only the fifth player in MLB history to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium.
Giancarlo Stanton, May 12, 2015
Before Tatis’ moonshot, the last player to clear the Dodgers’ home ballpark was Giancarlo Stanton on May 12, 2015. The four-time All-Star, then of the Miami Marlins, sent a pitch from Mike Bolsinger over the left-field pavilion that traveled an estimated 475 feet.
Mark McGwire, May 22, 1999
Another player to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium is former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire. As part of a 3-for-4 effort on May 22, 1999, McGwire ended the night with a towering 483 foot home run off Jamie Arnold that cleared the left-center field pavilion.
Mike Piazza, Sept. 21, 1997
The only Dodger to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium to this day remains Mike Piazza. The Hall of Famer accomplished this feat on Sept. 21, 1997, sending a pitch from Colorado Rockies starter Frank Castillo over the left-field pavilion that traveled an estimated 478 feet.
Willie Stargell, May 8, 1973
The first player to ever hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium is Pittsburgh Pirates legend Willie Stargell. He did so twice over the course of his 21-year career, with the second instance occurring on May 8, 1973.
Stargell hit an estimated 470 foot home run off Andy Messersmith that cleared the right-field pavilion.
Willie Stargell, Aug. 5, 1965
Stargell’s first time hitting a ball out of Dodger Stadium came on Aug. 5, 1965. It was his most majestic blast as he sent a pitch from Alan Foster over the right-field pavilion that traveled an estimated 506 feet and six inches.
