Dodgers News: Cody Bellinger Hits Home Run In Rehab Game With OKC

Cody Bellinger resumed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, again batting second and starting in center field. Bellinger hit a home run in his first at-bat and finished the day 1-for-4 in OKC’s 11-10 loss to the Albuquerque Isotopes (Colorado Rockies affiliate).

Bellinger played seven innings in the field as he continues to work toward a return to the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. The 25-year-old joined Oklahoma City over the weekend — along with Zach McKinstry — and nearly hit a homer in the first at-bat of his rehab assignment.

Bellinger and McKinstry each played five innings last Friday, and were overshadowed by Keibert Ruiz slugging two home runs for his fourth career multi-homer game.

Bellinger was off Saturday, but McKinstry entered off the bench to play second base. McKinstry also started Sunday, playing seven innings in right field. McKinstry doubled in the first inning and also went 1-for-4.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated both players could potentially be activated at some point during this weekend’s home series against the San Francisco Giants.

Bellinger last played for the Dodgers on April 5, when he was spiked in the left calf in the ninth inning of a blowout win over the Oakland Athletics. Bellinger was initially diagnosed with a contusion but a CT scan more than one week later revealed a hairline fracture in his left fibula.

McKinstry has been on the 10-day injured list since April 23 because of a right oblique strain. It’s the first time the 26-year-old has suffered that type of injury.

Gonsolin joins Bellinger, McKinstry

Bellinger and McKinstry were accompanied on their respective rehab assignments by Tony Gonsolin, who pitched in his first game action of the regular season.

The plan called for Gonsolin to log two innings in his rehab start for OKC, and potentially start the third if he was efficient. The right-hander wound up going three full innings on just 38 pitches (30 strikes). Gonsolin allowed one hit and struck out three.

The Dodgers want Gonsolin to be stretched out to four innings prior to being activated off the 60-day IL, which he is not eligible for until May 31.
