The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Tony Gonsolin to the 60-day injured list in order to make the signing of Albert Pujols official and add him to the club’s 40-man roster. A secondary move is still required for Pujols to be placed on the active roster.
Gonsolin remains on the mend from right shoulder inflammation that forced him to the IL during the first week of the season. Being transferred to the 60-day is not indicative of any sort of setback for Gonsolin.
All it cements is he cannot be activated until May 31, which was likely around the date for a return anyhow. “Sometime middle of the week, he will throw a three-inning simulated game against hitters,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Roberts recently indicated the club wanted Gonsolin to build up to four innings prior to coming off the IL. That would suggest a second time facing batters after this week’s session.
Gonsolin could remain at the Dodgers’ alternate training site or join a Minor League affiliate on a rehab assignment. The Dodgers have not yet outlined which option they may decide on for the 27-year-old.
What is already certain is Gonsolin will see his role change from the start of the season. He was among three starters put in the bullpen for the Opening Day roster, but now is going to be relied on to fill the void left by Dustin May undergoing Tommy John surgery.
May on the road to recovery
May underwent surgery last week to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow and officially began the steps toward returning in 2022.
“From my understanding, the surgery couldn’t have gone any better,” Roberts said at the time. “I’m excited for Dustin to get that behind him and now work towards healing and strengthening.”
May was then transferred to the 60-day IL as a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for Travis Blankenhorn, who was claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.
