The Los Angeles Dodgers withstood another onslaught from Fernando Tatis Jr. to notch a 5-4 comeback win over the San Diego Padres that snapped a two-game losing streak.
Tatis wasted little time building on his two-home run game against Clayton Kershaw by leading off the first inning Saturday night with a solo shot. It kept Tatis in line with his father, who also went deep the game after hitting two grand slams in one inning at Dodger Stadium.
Tatis celebrated his home run by covering one eye as he rounded first base, a reference to Bauer’s tendency to close one at times when pitching. That wound up being just the start as Tatis broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with a one-handed home run to left-center field.
He reveled in hitting a quality pitch by doing the Conor McGregor strut that Bauer has often imitated.
While San Diego had again taken the lead, it was short-lived. Blake Snell, who had already allowed one run in each of the second and third innings, retired Max Muncy to start the sixth and was removed from the game.
That decision proved costly for the Padres as Sheldon Neuse, Chris Taylor and Matt Beaty loaded the bases on three straight singles. Taylor and Beaty appeared off the bench and ended what had been a season-long drought for the Dodgers. Heading into the night their pinch-hitters were 0-for-19 with 13 strikeouts.
Following Mookie Betts’ walk that brought in a run to tie the game, Corey Seager gave the Dodgers what held as a game-winning two-run single.
Victor Gonzalez, Blake Treinen and Scott Alexander all appeared before Kenley Jansen entered to convert a four-out save.
Bauer slides past Machado
After allowing two singles to Manny Machado in their first time facing one another this season, Bauer held him hitless and had two strikeouts in three at-bats Saturday. He accomplished as much by exclusively throwing sliders.
Machado entered the game a career 12-for-19 with two doubles, four home runs, six RBI and four walks against Bauer.
