The Los Angeles Dodgers announced ahead of Sunday’s series finale with the San Francisco Giants that they have recalled Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City and as a corresponding move, Yasiel Puig was placed on the 10-day disabled list with an ankle injury and hip pointer.
Stewart could be in line to start Monday’s series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks after Rich Hill was scratched from the start with an infection in his finger.
The 26-year-old was off to a good start with Oklahoma City this season, going 1-0 with 2.41 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in four starts. He has struck out 20 compared to just six walks in 18.2 innings.
Stewart was productive in his time with the big league club in 2017, yielding a 3.41 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 34.1 innings of work. He fared much better as a reliever though, posting a 2.18 ERA in 13 appearances out of the bullpen compared to a 5.27 ERA in four starts.
Puig injured his ankle in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday fouling a ball off of his foot. He was removed from the game after the at-bat and underwent x-rays on the ankle, which came back negative.
The injury is considered a bruise, although it is serious enough that it warranted a stint on the disabled list. Puig is also dealing with a hip pointer from running into the wall to make a catch the inning before fouling the ball off his foot.
While Puig is out, Alex Verdugo could see the majority of the time in right field after being called up from Oklahoma City on Saturday. Joc Pederson has also been swinging a hot bat, so he could also see some extended playing time.
