The Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers have gotten off to a hot start to the 2018 season, which is not a surprise considering the organization is filled with depth. Thus, the OKC roster boasts players who could be on MLB rosters in other organizations.
Going into play Sunday, Oklahoma City were winners of six straight games. Extending that sterak looked in jeopardy though as the New Orleans Baby Cakes, an affiliate of the Miami Marlins, scored a run in the top of the 10th inning to take a 6-5 lead.
The Dodgers responded by putting two runners on base with no one out in the bottom of the 10th though, bringing up top prospect Alex Verdugo.
Verdugo launched a three-run home run to propel OKC to a seventh straight win and second in a row that came in walk-off fashion.
While Verdugo had the game-winning hit, Henry Ramos also had a strong day, going 4-for-5 with a grand slam, his second in the last three games. Tim Locastro also swung the bat well, going 3-for-4, also being hit by a pitch and scoring two runs.
Overall, Oklahoma City is first in their division with an 8-1 record. They will look to keep their winning streak going on Monday when they host New Orleans in the finale of a four-game series.
Verdugo, who made his MLB debut as a September call-up last season, looks to be Major League ready as he is batting .324/.342/.541 with two home runs and seven RBI in nine games so far at Oklahoma City.
