In order to create needed room on their 40-man roster for part of Friday’s activity, which included calling up O’Koyea Dickson and Alex Verdugo, the Los Angeles Dodgers designated Brett Eibner and Luis Ysla for assignment.
Eibner’s 2017 campaign came to an end in early August after he underwent Tommy John surgery. While he never pitched in a game, Eibner threw multiple bullpen sessions this season, which left Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt intrigued.
In 17 games with the Dodgers, Eibner hit .182/.250/.364 with two home runs and six RBI. In 37 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he batted .231/.289/.385 with four home runs and 14 RBI.
Two months prior to Spring Training this year, the Dodgers acquired Eibner from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Minor League infielder Jordan Tarsovich.
Eibner was a second-round pick of the Kansas Royals in 2010 out of the University of Arkansas, where Eibner played the outfield and pitched.
The Dodgers acquired Ysla from the Boston Red Sox in July in exchange for cash considerations. Boston added Ysla to their 40-man roster last fall in advance of the 2016 Rule 5 Draft.
Upon being traded to the Dodgers, Ysla was immediately optioned to Double-A Tulsa, where he yielded a 6.17 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in eight games.
The 25-year-old has yet to reach the Majors and in addition to the Red Sox, previously spent time in the San Francisco Giants organization. Ysla signed with the Giants as an international free agent in September 2012.
