When the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers opened a three-game series on Monday, the Reds were mired in a seven-game losing streak, while the Dodgers were one night removed from playing 17 innings.

What leaned heavily in the Dodgers’ favor was having Clayton Kershaw on the mound in the series opener. Kershaw tossed a complete-game shutout, his third such game this month, and the Dodgers squeaked out a 1-0 victory.

Tuesday didn’t come with much success for Cincinnati. They managed to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but lost it in the bottom half of the inning.

Then with two outs in the seventh and the Dodgers leading, 5-2, Joey Votto went to retrieve a paper airplane that landed inside of first base. Rather than simply picking up and disposing the fan-made aircraft, Votto angrily stepped on it before sticking the plane in his back pocket.

The Dodger Stadium crowd immediately booed the Reds’ slugger, and upon returning to first base, Votto was met by an amused Adrian Gonzalez:

Votto drew more ire from the crowd when he stepped to the plate for his first at-bat after the incident. He finished the night 1-for-4 with a double, though the Reds lost a ninth consecutive game.
